Amy (Mayim Bialik) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) are confirmed to still be together, but Young Sheldon just hinted that they could split up after The Big Bang Theory. The couple had a tumultuous dating start as both were hesitant about acting on their mutual attraction. Eventually they got together, and despite a big break-up, they eventually patched things up, got married, and at the end of The Big Bang Theory, won the Nobel Prize in Physics. But, their marriage bliss might not last forever.
Bialik returned to the CBS prequel for another voice cameo, marking her second appearance. Amy made her first guesting stint during the Young Sheldon season 4 premiere where it was revealed that she and Sheldon share a son in the future named Leonard Cooper. In her latest involvement on The Big Bang Theory spin-off, she’s recruited by her husband to talk about certain things that affect a relationship. There is some fun and innocent banter between the pair, which is always fun to hear, but it also hints at the real status of their relationship, and it isn’t looking good.
In Young Sheldon season 5, episode 16, “A Suitcase Full of Cash and a Yellow Clown Car,” the pair talks about intimacy. Amy says that it can be a problem for couples, “especially when one doesn’t want to be intimate as frequently as the other.” She’s clearly referring to her own marriage, but Sheldon’s oblivious about it, even having to ask who his wife is talking about. This moment is played for comedy, but it’s an indication that the Coopers’ marriage has some serious issues. Fans of The Big Bang Theory know that Amy broke up with Sheldon on the original sitcom because she had been so frustrated about having to constantly beg him for some kind of physical intimacy. The fact that it’s a persistent dilemma, even when they have been married for several years, surely has only made Amy more miserable. And it wouldn’t be outside the realm of possibility if she decides to leave him because of it.
For a while, it seemed like the couple got past this on The Big Bang Theory. After they got married, Sheldon had been more open about going to bed with his wife, but clearly, that isn’t the case. The problem is, Sheldon and Amy never really properly discussed their issues when they got back together in the nerd-themed sitcom. Sheldon just wooed her back and that was pretty much it. Now, their intimacy incompatibility continues to haunt them. That being said, it’s also unfair to pin this all on Sheldon.
As seen on Young Sheldon, the genius has always struggled with socialization and other basic human functions. While Amy gradually developed these skills, her husband, unfortunately, didn’t. There’s no doubt Sheldon loves Amy; she just needs to be more upfront with her problems instead of being passive-aggressive about it. It’s difficult to imagine Sheldon and Amy no longer being together, especially after everything that they’ve been through on The Big Bang Theory. But based on Bialik’s cameo on Young Sheldon, it seems like they have a serious problem. And if they don’t address it, realistically, splitting up down the road may actually happen.
