Young Sheldon Hints Sheldon Broke His Big Star Trek Rule For Leonard

Sheldon asked Leonard a Star Trek question in his roommate screening, and Young Sheldon hints that he may have let Leonard's "incorrect" answer slide.

Surprisingly, Young Sheldon hinted that Sheldon (Jim Parsons) may have broken his Star Trek rule just so he could have Leonard (Johnny Galecki) as a roommate in The Big Bang Theory. As its prequel series, the ongoing CBS sitcom retroactively explains some of Sheldon’s oddest behavior and preferences on The Big Bang Theory. But given its lax approach to preserving continuity, sometimes, it reveals new details about the socially-inept genius that directly contradict what he did or said on the original show causing frustrations for some fans.

Young Sheldon season 5 has actually done a great job providing fun backstories to some of Sheldon’s weirdest quirks. Apparently, he decided to use the word “coitus” instead of “sex” after Mary (Zoe Perry) and Missy (Raegan Revord) got into an awkward conversation about it. Meanwhile, his hatred toward engineering and dismissal of Big Bang Theory’s Howard (Simon Helberg) was developed after struggling with his first engineering class in college. This gave him a chip on his shoulder that he never fully outgrew. That being said, the series has also raised some questions, including one that involves his definitive Star Trek character ranking.

In Young Sheldon season 5, episode 12, “A Pink Cadillac and a Glorious Tribal Dance,” Sheldon found himself stressed about what he was going to do during his first spring break in college. Luckily, he came across an advertisement for the Texarcana Sci-Fi Convention which coincided with his mid-semester break. No one wanted to go with him, but he was adamant about attending, so on his own, he boarded the community bus to the event where he found himself among fellow Trekkies. At one point, he was locked in an intense discussion about Star Trek where he argued that James Kirk is better than Jean-Luc Picard. However, fans of The Big Bang Theory would remember that this comparison was part of his preliminary roommate screening and it revealed something interesting. When he asked Leonard this same question, Leonard chose Picard over Kirk, yet Sheldon accepted it as the correct answer.

For what it’s worth, Sheldon may have simply changed his mind over the years and decided that Picard was better than Kirk. However, he’s also known for sticking to his original opinions and rarely reconsidering if he might have been wrong. If anything, he hates any kind of change because it makes him uncomfortable. So there are two ways to explain his reaction to Leonard’s answer on The Big Bang Theory. Firstly, something happens between the events of Young Sheldon and The Big Bang Theory that causes him to decide that Picard is indeed better than Kirk. Or, Sheldon gave Leonard a pass because he immediately wanted Leonard as his next roommate. Regardless of what actually happened, things worked out for the best because Leonard was nothing but patient with him on The Big Bang Theory.

At this point, Young Sheldon has already featured three core cast members of The Big Bang Theory over the course of its run. Kaley Cuoco, Mayim Bialik, and Simon Helberg have all made voice cameos. It’s safe to say that it’s only a matter of time before Johnny Galecki also appears. Hopefully, his guest appearance will reveal more information about Leonard’s friendship with Sheldon and clear up some of the inconsistencies regarding Sheldon’s Star Trek opinions.
